All of the antique iron used throughout the house, with the exception of the master bedroom balcony, was found with a synchronistic significance. All of the pieces were found long after the openings were created. With very few exceptions, the antique iron pieces did not need to be altered to fit any of the openings. The matching iron railings located upstairs between the hand-carved columns fit perfectly without any modifications, even though the openings are different widths apart! If you look closely, the columns aren’t spaced equally apart. They differ by 1 ½”. This is enough to frustrate any contractor, but at Vivienda Estates, this was just what the universe ordered. The iron we found looked like an identical pair, but also happened to differ by the same 1 ½”. The remaining iron left over from other iron pieces used around the house was used in the stair railings; there was just enough and they were just the right height for the space we needed to fill. The same is true for the iron railings located just outside the breakfast nook. The iron located on the master deck was exactly the right height and only the width had to be cut down.
The most amazing coincidence were the twenty (20) matching pieces of solid antique iron that we purchased from a hospital in Virginia that had been deconstructed. We found enough matching pieces to fit all the remaining openings of different sizes with very little welding or cutting required. The iron for these openings could not have fit better if we had custom ordered them in advance. This astonishing synchronicity lead these iron pieces and their design to become the basis of the logo for Viviendas Estate which can be seen sprinkled throughout the property.
